I did this hike as part of a longer 31+ mile day hike. Like the Springer Mountain day hike, this hike begins at Big Stamp Gap , USFS 42 Parking lot. From here, the hike turns south towards Springer Mountain. At 0.9 miles, the AT reaches the southern terminus of the AT. Here you can catch the view from Springer Mountain. After taking in the view, I hiked north of the AT for 0.2 miles to the southern terminus of the BMT. The BMT is blazed with a white diamond. I turn right on the BMT. From here the BMT begins to lose elevation immediately for a short time and then begins a short 150 foot climb. At approximately 1.3 miles, I came across a short side trail. There are signs on the BMT pointing to Owens overlook from a rock outcropping. Owens overlook offers a great view.
I return to the BMT and turn right. From here, the AT begins a constant descent for approximately 0.8 miles. However, at 1.7 miles the BMT crosses USFS 42. For the next mile, the BMT begins to level off and crosses two different creeks.
